Firstly, the suction power on this rather compact cleaner is second to none, and should suck up the most stubborn of dust and dirt. I've used it on both my wood and carpeted flooring, and it performs excellently on both. All the filth gets siphoned into the see-through dust barrel on the cleaner, which is a great way to see just how much nastiness accumulates on your floors (and give you the satisfaction that you've done a good job of cleaning!). This is detached and emptied really easily - truly no-nonsense cleaning, and no more replacing bags. And if you live in a smaller place with little storage, it barely takes up any cupboard space at all.
You have the standard extra attachments here for brushing and getting into tight spaces, and they're both very handy for doing things like upholstered furniture, curtains and such like. I generally prefer upright vacuum cleaners to these more compact models, but the sturdy, long, main head attachment is more than ample enough to prevent me from having to stoop to vacuum, and getting a sore back (and I'm pretty tall). The main unit is also not too heavy, so you can carry it with one hand as you vacuum with the other, making it nice and portable if you're on a roving clean around the house. The extension cord is a decent length, too, meaning you won't be changing plugs too often.
This is the second Vax I've gotten my hands on after its larger sibling Vax C91-MZ-P Mach Zen Pet Multicyclonic Bagless Cylinder Vacuum
One of my personal interests is how these products can relate to usage by someone with a disability or limited mobility so this new, compact design from VAX was particularly interesting to me. Compared to the larger one VAX have used some pretty impressive thinking and put together a quality product with the least possible weight and maximum usability. The same standard of powerful suction is there, as is the bagless design. Those two features have to be a given at this point in the target market. It has two extra tools alongside the standard carpet cleaning head, and instead of being stuck in recesses in the cleaner body they are actually integrated into the handle with a second tool holder on the upright metal tube.
Good design, VAX. Well played. No kneeling down to change tools or turning a heavy cleaner body over.
Where it scores is in build quality with excellent quality plastics and finishing. Buttons and catches are comfortably large and well-marked in bright orange plastics, with foot controls for cable reel and on/off. The dust canister detaches with a single click of a well-placed button and lifts away vertically using the large handle, with the bottom hinged so it can be emptied into a dustbin easily. It then simply clicks back into place. The hose is easily attached and detached using two colour-coded buttons for storage if needed. The unit is light and easily moved around, so it's going to be ideal if you are thinking of usage by someone with a disability or an elderly user. Mine is being used by a lady in her seventies who has now given away her upright cleaner which was proving to be too heavy and unweildly.
So it's compact (good), powerful (very good), easy to use (excellent) AND well built (outstanding). VAX are now firmly positioned at the quality end of the market for carpet cleaning, and this is certainly a cleaner that continues their push into that field. Particularly suitable for elderly or disabled users.
